Inaugural Cheap Beer of the Month Club!

Oh ho, what's that?  It's the first Friday of the month?  Well, that can only mean one thing:  it's time for our CHEAP BEER OF THE MONTH CLUB.  Which I am starting.  Today.  Here's how it works:

1.  I drink cheap beer.  Because I'm cheap.  But...
2.  Not all cheap beers are created equal.  So...
3.  Obviously I should have a regular segment where I discuss the merits of various cheap beers.  And...
4.  If you are cool, then you will drink this cheap beer with me.  Beer snobbery is a luxury of the pompous and the employed, and if there's one thing I can't stand, it's people who are pompous and employed and think they're too good to drink Bud Light.  Speaking of which...

Unfortunately, I sort of forgot that this was the first Friday of the month until, er, this morning.  So I'll just have to go with what's currently in my refrigerator.  Fortunately, what's in my refrigerator is cheap beer.  In fact, it's the most popular cheap beer in the United States:

Yeah, Bud Light.  In a can.  It was on sale this week.  Don't act like you're above it.  Do not even fucking act like you're above Bud Light in a can.

CHEAP BEER OF THE MONTH FOR FEBRUARY 2011:  BUD LIGHT (in a can)

Gas station or grocery store?  I bought this particular 18-pack at my local Kroger, but there isn't a gas station in America that isn't stocked to the gills with Budweiser-y goodness.

Price:  $14.99 for an 18-pack, so, with tax, about $0.88 a can.  (Tip:  A true Cheap Beer Aficionado never pays more than a $1 per beer.)

Swill quality:  With 1 being water and 10 being Guinness, we're at about 4.5.

Packaging/label:  Pretty generic.  There is nothing special about that bold blue aluminum...except that it has Bud Light inside of it.

Shame factor:  Moderate.  Aforementioned beer snobs will undoubtedly look down on you for drinking this, but they're beer snobs.  They have much bigger issues in life to deal with than your beer selection.

Overall:  This is a solid cheap beer, earning points both for being available at literally every establishment in the United States where money changes hands, and for being on sale roughly every day of the week at your local Exxon.  Plus, it has a smooth flavor that makes drinking 7 to 15 of them in one sitting not only possible, but potentially enjoyable.  There's a reason why this is the most drunk beer in America, and I don't know what that reason is.  But I do know that I've had a hell of a lot worse.

  3. Both of these comments made me laugh hysterically. :D

ANY TAKERS ON THE BUD LIGHT OUT THERE?! I know there's gotta be someone... ;D

(And Jess, thank you so much for reading through it all!!!!! *hugs*)

  4. Something in a can like that usually means some sort of fizz. I like fizz.. so maybe i might take a bud light??!!

  5. You could take a Bud Light. :D In fact, I'm putting that near the top of our list!!

  6. Alas, I am a self proclaimed beer snob. I am not a wine snob nor a liquor snob, though, so does that earn me some points? I had two sips of a Bud Light once and then handed it over to Justin to finish. I would like your readers to know that you can get Shiner for less than a dollar a bottle at grocery stores in Texas : ) Does that make it a cheap beer?

  7. Oh, that would be the Megan portion of Jonathan and Megan, btw.

  8. As a cheap wine drinker who might start making her own cheap beer, (I'm a Corona girl)I have to say, any beer will do in a pinch. I think you know someone who makes beer. If you can get your hands on some of that beer, we are talking the cheapest of all beers.

  9. You mean, Bud Light is considered cheap beer? Huh. That's my beer of choice when out and about and enjoying beer! All this time I didn't know I was a cheap date!

When I'm buying for home, I can't pass up Shiner Blond, tho. I know it's considered boutique-y, but seriously....I'm from Texas. It's cheap here. No really! The only problem is that I only ever see it in grocery stores that sell boutique-y and import beers, which kind of lends it a "better than you" air....but I can live with that. Once it gets home and into my fridge, it has to rub elbows with my cheap wine, which tends to take it down a notch.

  10. As I'm a Shandypants and have to dilute my cheap beer with lemonade...do I need to cost in the price of a bottle of pop in my equation?!

Nothing like a glass of cold shandy or cider on a hot summers day...bring on the long summer days and beer gardens. This winter's been hanging around far too long!

Love how the posts that have attracted the most comments are about candy and beer...think you might have sussed out your target audience perfectly PG x

  11. ^^^ I was thinking the same thing! I mean, I was kind of just throwing everything out there with this blog, but there is a very clear pattern here on what people want to read about. Fascinating... :D But, okay, I have seriously never heard of diluting beer with lemonade (and by lemonade I'm guessing you mean Sprite?!)! Alcohol tips I didn't know about?! OH, I am going to have to experiment with this (and then probably write a blog about it :D).

So we have two for Shiner being cheap in Texas! Having bought it for Megan when she's in town, I know it's not cheap enough here to make my own cheap beer list, but nonetheless, it is cheap somewhere. Anything that can be bought somewhere in the world for less than a dollar a bottle is A-OK IN MY BOOK. :D

I have to say, any beer will do in a pinch. Yes, yes, YES. This is my motto in life. And you are very right, Aunt Joan, that I do know someone who can provide me with the cheapest beer there is... And homebrew is almost always higher in alcohol content so...double bonus! Maybe the Heineke brand will have to be next month's pick. :)

Miffed, the next time you pass through Memphis, it's you, me, and Bud Light. All the freaking way. ;)

  12. Wow, this turned out to be a very popular post!!!

I have been known to drink my share of Bud Light even in cans, but not my favorite beer for sure. I don't consider myself a beer snob, but really prefer dark ale. Guinness is not my choice though. Belhaven Wee Heavy is the shit. No lie. However, that is not easy to come by in most bars in Texas, unless it's a Scottish pub, so Shiner Bock is usually what I drink. But the dark Shiner isn't as cheap for some reason as the blonde. Doesn't make any sense to me, but at least it's not as pricey as the damn dark ale that I adore. & PG if you ever make it to Houston, we are going drinking at my corner pub, it's actually at the end of my street, seriously. >;-)

  13. ^^^ Done! :D And it's funny the percentage of people living in Texas! I never really thought about it before, but I do know quite a few Texans. I don't think I've had Belhaven Wee Heavy. I'll order one my next trip to the Flying Saucer! And I totally just Googled it and there's a Saucer in Houston. Awesome. :)

Crazily enough, when I first turned 21, I almost never drank anywhere except the Saucer, and they had $2.50 pint night on Monday, so I developed a taste for beer drinking all of these exotic and really nice beers. Then I lost my drinking buddies and moved out on my own and had a fridge to stock, so I slowly started shifting my tastes. And look at me now. My last trip to the Saucer, I actually ordered a Bud Light! Some would call that blasphemy. I would call it spending my money wisely. ;)

  14. You're right, I do mean Sprite. May be interesting to mix it with traditional lemonade :/

Best way to make an authentic lager shandy is: fill your glass half full with Sprite, beat the hell out of it with a teaspoon to make it flat, then tip the glass and fill the rest with lager (bitter shandys pretty good as well). That way you don't end up with just a glass of froth! The other option is a Lager-top ...leave about a cm clear at the top of the glass to top up with sprite, takes the bitter taste off really cheap lager!

This has been your Shandy making public service announcement for the day!

    ReplyDelete
  15. ^^^ Ooops there I go again with my unknown English terms....
    Lager = light beer
Bitter = dark beer (but not Guiness which is a stout!)

P.S, Can you tell I spent many a year funding my student life working behind bars!

  16. AWESOME. I'm so going to try this. Maybe with Sprite *and* lemonade. :) And look at you. You took a post about freaking Bud Light and turned it into a lesson on mixing classy drinks. WELL DONE. :D

    ReplyDelete
  17. Wow, I've never had a shandy, that sounds interesting. I love to try all kinds of beer & ales, so that might be something I would like. Of course I would want to try the bitter shandy since I prefer dark beer.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Sorry to disappoint, but believe me ... Shandy is NOT a classy drink! Looking forward to hearing about the Bud light and lemonade cocktails and the next edition of the Cheap Beer Club :)

    ReplyDelete
  19. HA!! Oh, but it requires mixing two things, and not chugging something directly from the bottle, ergo I consider it a step up regardless! ;D

    ReplyDelete
  20. ummm you have way too much time on your hands. way too much.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'm hurt that my drinking buddy is looking down on my celebration of beer. :(

    ReplyDelete
  22. I love that the post with the most comments is the one about cheap beer!!

I always thought a shandy was an aussie thing, we have them on hot days (and Becky, my cheeks dont twitch!) But, at the same time we dont wisk it to make it flat we just mix half and half.. fizz all the way!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I FULLY planned to do an "Alcohol Friday" post yesterday and make a shandy or two, but now I'm actually glad that I wound up being away from my computer and couldn't get to it. Because we have a THIRD option (fizzy!) for a shandy now! Meaning in the very near future, there is going to be a seriously in-depth shandy report. :D

I, too, love that this is the most popular post! Clearly we all have our priorities right around here!!
