Why Taylor Swift Reminds Me of Gandhi, and Other Lessons from the Weekend

1.  Taylor Swift is so in right now.

2.  Taylor Swift is so in that I went to Target on Friday and bought her new album.  And then I came home and listened the hell out of it.

3.  The way the world is currently reacting to Taylor Swift reminds me of the famous Gandhi quote: "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win."

Taylor Swift.  You have won.

4.  I was thinking about this...and I was thinking about how when "Shake It Off" was first released, it was deep in competition with "All About That Bass."  But then Meghan Trainor faded a little...not because she didn't have a catchy song, but because until "All About That Bass," no one had ever heard of Meghan Trainor.  And everyone in the whole goddamn world has heard of Taylor Swift.  So there's still something to be said for the staying power of fame earned the old fashioned way, which is heartening in light of the Alex-from-Target issue.

5.  I saw Nightcrawler over the weekend - the first time I've seen a Jake Gyllenhaal movie in the theater in over two years.  It was good.  It was also (temporarily) number one at the box office, and when I found that out, I experienced uncontaminated gratitude that Jake's career is doing well.  As I was just telling someone the other day, I have neither good feelings nor bad feelings about Jake anymore.  There are no feelings at all.  But I do wish him success and happiness (as I wish everyone success and happiness!).

6.  Three blog entries in three days.  Do not get used to this.

  1. I like “Shake It Off” so much its ridiculous.

I also posted about Taylor and her hair on my Facebook page this week.

Then i just read a story yesterday about how she stopped while running in a Nashville park to join a fan getting some professional photos taken...

As much as i tried and tried to not like that girl, you are so right. She’s won

  2. Ha! I KNOW. She does all this crazy-amazing stuff in appreciation of her fans, and the older she gets, the more relatable her lyrics become. Really, at this stage, there doesn't seem to be any point in resisting... :)

  4. P.s Did you ever think there would be a day where we would converse in comments about Taylor and not mention you know who??

    1. No! Never!! And, in fact, it took a lot of restraint not to somehow mention in the post itself those entries I wrote two years ago about her - I seem to recall having ridiculously in-depth conversations in the comments about her relationship with a certain someone... How things change!!

Her CD is good, but none of the other songs sound anything like "Shake It Off." It's a very "pop" album, and a lot of the lyrics are pretty typical for Taylor (i.e., extremely specific mentions of past relationships), but there's also some self-deprecating humor, which I like. :) It's worth a listen!
