Literally - literally - the only positive thing I can think to say about your campaign thus far is that you chose a running mate who has not (yet) caused me to projectile vomit. (More than we can say about John McCain in 2008.)

[Normally I have a lot of fun during election season bashing the other team. This year, I feel like the more humane thing would be if we could somehow put the Republicans out of their misery already...]
Oh my god yes! I feel nauseous from across the atlantic. can Obama just win already?!
ReplyDeleteDid you see that fake medic ad for using rape as contraceptive? Kind of funny, but truth is it's hard to know whether to laugh or cry cause some people just don't get it. So can Obama just win already?!
I haven't seen that ad! I'll try to find it online... This whole election cycle has lacked the enthusiasm and intensity of the last one, but even at that, I was expecting a little more of a fight from the Republicans! I know we still have the debates ahead, and that nothing is certain and anything can happen, but the news cycle has just been *dominated* lately by really, really stupid things that the Romney campaign has done. It's almost hard to watch because so much of it is pathetic... (Although also disturbing is that there are millions of people out there who are just as out of touch with reality as he is...)
DeleteI'm totally with you...let's just let Obama win already!!!!
What scares me is: There are millions who will vote for Romney
DeleteNot that german politicians are better or anything... there are just stupids out there. And we lack any charasmatic and human ones.
Or maybe they are too human and lack what we as humans deprive any other being on this planet off
Annie Sasha (hahaha I don't know how to sign anymore)
speaking of which:

can you even be so stupid to not see the betrayal in it? does anyone really believe he will NOT do the amended return??? No matter if he wins or loses???
Annie Sasha
UGH, don't even get me started on the tax returns!! People see what they want to see, and they'll also gladly listen to others instead of taking the time to consider multiple viewpoints and come to their own conclusions. Case in point, many middle class Republicans have *completely* bought into the idea (perpetuated by Romney and other Republicans) that tax breaks for rich people are going to somehow lead to more income for them (WHAT?!). It makes no sense.
DeleteUnfortunately, with many people in this country committed to one side or the other no matter what (which, admittedly, is a category I fall into), the outcome of this election will come down to those few people in just a few states who really are undecided. I guess we'll know soon enough how it ends up, but I really do sometimes wish we could fast-forward to election day already!
Also, sadly, the outcome will come down to how many laws the Republicans can pass to stop the minorities voting for Obama from actually voting. There's a reason why they don't call themselves democrates, but they should at least be democratic.
DeleteThat is very, very true and a very real (and scary) thing that I've been paying close attention to (in part because Tennessee is one of the states that has a new voter ID law). Unfortunately, too many people either aren't paying attention, don't care, or won't realize the implications until election day, when it's too late. When voter suppression is the only tactic you can think of to help your guy win, maybe it's time to reassess your priorities... :-/

ReplyDeleteLet me know your thoughts :-)
Did my comment disappear or did I lose it? I don't know, but here's the link to the fake add: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtzqvqzBdUQ

ReplyDeleteIs blogger secretely sponsored by republicans?! Cause I've been trying to post the link to the fake add a few times no and it just keeps disappearing on me :-(
Hope it works this time!
Um, okay, so (many days later) I found all of these in the spam comments folder! (And I guess I should check the comments there more often because there were several others in there.) But clearly you are not spam!!! I apologize on behalf of crazy Blogger.
DeleteYeah, like don't change your politics so that a majority feels that your politics is for them, just make sure they can't vote for the other guy. So f-ing absurd in a country that is proud of it's democratic tradition and claims that they fight for democratic values abroad. Sorry to be hard on your country (mine is far from perfect) but it just makes me really angry (among many other things).
ReplyDeleteSorry, that was me (Malin) both times. I'm having some trouble with the comment field. I tried to get you the link to that fake medic add, but my comment just gets removed and then I couldn't comment with my name. Wierd.
ReplyDeleteOne more try http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtzqvqzBdUQ
ReplyDeleteWow, what an ad, Malin! I'm glad it's gotten as many hits as it has, but I hope it gets more because I feel like the whole "legitimate rape" issue was something that was kind of glossed over in the grand scheme of things here. There's so much noise here that even those like myself, who try to keep up with it all, can get lost in the chaos.
DeleteAnd I think you and I have talked about this before, but it's striking all over again right now: it amazes me how people outside of this country (like you) often have a much, MUCH better grasp of what's going on here than the people who live here. I was talking to some friends last week, and it was a fairly sizable group of people, and NONE OF THEM had any idea that Romney's "47%" comment had even happened. I mean, didn't know about it AT ALL. Things like that are always a wake-up call for me. That was the top news story here for three full days (top headline on the evening news, biggest story on the editorial page of the paper, etc.), but there are so many people who just don't pay attention. It's crazy.
(And I'm really sorry about the comments; you aren't the only one who's had trouble and I can't figure out why! :( )
Ha, I sometimes feel like I know more about what goes on in the American context than the Swedish one (which isn't true, of course, but it feels like it sometimes because I do miss out on a lot that goes on over here).
ReplyDeleteIt's just so sad that people are not more aware - regarding a lot of issues, actually. And that so many don't even seem to have the ambition to find out more about societal issues (and yet still think it's quite alright to make statements about issues when they don't have a clue what they're talking about - like they guy admitting he'd never thought about the reasons a woman might seek an abortion, while he's dead set on having abortions banned. Just go educate yourself, man!) Ignorant people is what I have the biggest problem with. Wr have NO excuse to be ignorant to the world around us, it is our fucking responsibility to keep democracy intact. It might not be perfect, but so far it's the best thing one got, and people are dying for it all over the world and we're just throwing it away because we cannot make the effort of seek the knowledge we need to form an opinion? It's such a disgrace I could cry.
Yeah, not too fond of people in general today. Sorry.
Also legitimate rape?! WTF?! No consent = rape. It's not rocket science. *deep sigh*
You're one of the few people I know who gets as passionate about these subjects as I do, Malin, which part of the reason why I love talking to you about them! I also enjoy our political/social conversations because you *do* come at this from a different angle; Americans (as you well know) are extremely self-centered in the sense that we rarely see or pay attention to the world outside our borders. To keep my own such tendencies in check, I love talking to you about things that we're both witnessing but from two different points on the globe...
DeleteAnd you're 100% right about people taking democracy for granted. Sometimes I think a lot of that in this country in particular has to do with the fact that we're a "young" nation still, and don't have a lot of perspective in terms of the past. All this voter suppression stuff going on right now...so many here don't remember anyone ever struggling for the right to vote, so they fail to see what's happening right in front of their eyes. (Granted, I don't remember it personally, because it's never happened in my lifetime, but I do try to pay attention to history when I can.) Same with the people of my generation who, in droves, are refusing to vaccinate their children against diseases they know nothing about because they've never seen them, and thus giving us a resurgence in illnesses that science triumphed over long ago.
There was actually a really good line in The Audacity of Hope about not knowing whether humanity was really on an upward tick or if we were doomed to repeat the same ups and downs over and over. In the end, I guess the best we can hope for is the presence of mind to do the best in our own lives, but I know exactly where you're coming from in getting depressed about it sometimes. It's painful to watch people squander what others fought and died for - and *continue* to fight and die for. :-/
